About the Farm
Background
Founded with the mission to cultivate healthy communities, Allegheny Mountain Institute (AMI) has grown into a pivotal educational non-profit. Known for its Fellowship program, AMI prepares individuals to become leaders in the local food system. Over the years, AMI has trained numerous fellows who have gone on to become local food coordinators, farmers, and food systems educators. The institute has made significant strides in building resilient communities and food systems in the Allegheny Highlands and Shenandoah Valley.
Practices
AMI focuses on growing fresh produce using sustainable and regenerative agricultural practices. Their methods emphasize the connection between food and health, aiming to bolster the local food economy and improve access to nutrient-dense food. The produce grown at AMI is used in educational and health promotion projects, donated to hunger relief efforts, and sold at local outlets. The AMI Farm at Augusta Health, a joint venture with Augusta Health, raises awareness about healthy eating and sustainable growing practices.
The Rest
AMI offers an 18-month Fellowship program that prepares individuals to become teachers and ambassadors for a more vibrant and accessible local food system. The institute hosts open houses and educational sessions to engage the community. Their Highland County farm campus offers a sliding-scale CSA and supports emergency food initiatives. AMI's impact is amplified through partnerships with community organizations, working together to achieve goals related to agriculture, food, health, and education.
