About the Farm
Background
Criollo cattle were introduced to the Americas from Andalusia, Spain, during Columbus's second voyage. These cattle have adapted remarkably well to the harsh environments of the North American southwest. Known for their hardiness, fertility, gentle nature, and longevity, Criollo cattle have a storied history of thriving on available forage and improving pastures rather than depleting them. The Jandal Ranch in Central Texas continues this legacy by raising Criollo cattle in spacious pastures.
Practices
The ranch employs a 100% grass-fed approach, with cattle roaming freely across expansive pastures. Criollo cattle naturally self-rotate through the pasture, ensuring even land use and pasture improvement. They are raised without hormones or antibiotics, relying solely on natural grasses and high-quality hay during winter months. Each animal is DNA tested for tenderness and meat quality before entering the Certified Criollo Beef Program, ensuring consistent quality for consumers.
The Rest
Ranch visits are welcome, offering a firsthand look at the cattle and their environment. In addition to beef, the ranch also produces top-quality hay and breeds champion German Shorthaired Pointers. Dr. Janice W. Price, a veterinarian, and Dale K. Price, a retired airline pilot and rancher, manage the ranch. They also offer firearms training and custom rifle services. The ranch has a rich history of hunting and breeding Norwegian Elkhounds, although they no longer breed these dogs.
