About the Farm

Background

Established in 1638 by a land grant to Samuel Appleton, Appleton Farms is one of the oldest continuously operating farms in the United States and the oldest working farm in Massachusetts. It preserves a bucolic, pastoral landscape, agricultural traditions, and historic farm buildings that are rapidly disappearing in the eastern part of the state.

Practices

The farm connects people with the land through its Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) program, established in 2002. CSA members buy shares, joining in the risks and rewards of farming, and receive a bounty of fresh produce, flowers, herbs, and other farm products. The farm also operates a working dairy farm and a beef cattle operation, maintaining traditional farming practices.

The Rest

Today, the farm grows 625 CSA shares and offers them to a waitlist. The farm also has a dairy store where milk and cheese are available for sale.
