About the Farm
Background
The seeds of Atlas Farm first germinated in 2004 on a 2.5-acre plot of rented land in Montague, Massachusetts. Over the years, the farm has expanded to 120 acres and has built a region-wide reputation for top-quality organic produce. The farm's crew, many of whom have been with the farm for years, includes both year-round management staff and seasonal field crews hired through the H-2A visa program. In 2013, the Atlas Farm Store opened in South Deerfield to support local agriculture by providing a marketplace for regional farm products. In 2022, ownership of the Farm Store passed to former general manager Kelly Hickey.
Practices
All products are certified organic by Baystate Organic Certifiers under the USDA National Organic Program. The farm is committed to growing produce in a way that balances productivity with nurturing the ecosystem. The land lies along river banks in the Connecticut River Valley, known for its fertile vegetable-growing soil. Atlas Farm strives to be a model of ecological food production, minimizing resource consumption and environmental impact through constant improvements to farm systems.
The Rest
The Atlas Farm Store offers a variety of local products, including fruit and produce from other farms, yogurt, pickles, goat's milk caramel, coffee, and flour. Customers can also pick their own fruits and vegetables, such as cherry tomatoes, flowers, peas, and herbs. The farm's produce is sold at the Atlas Farm Store, local stores, and through wholesale distributors like Marty's Local, Myers Produce, and Food Connects. Atlas Farm also offers year-round delivery in Western Massachusetts and the Boston area, and works with local distributors to reach New York City and beyond.
