About the Farm
Background
Chris Wallner and Jane Hansen have dedicated themselves to sustainable living on their Northern Wisconsin farm. They are known for their commitment to energy efficiency, chemical avoidance, water and soil conservation, and a gentle footprint on the earth. Their farm has become a local staple, offering a variety of products and engaging in community events such as natural dye workshops and farm tours.
Practices
The farm employs regenerative farming techniques, including management intensive grazing, which involves rotating animals across pastures to allow plants to fully recover between grazing events. This method enhances soil health and provides nutritious forage for the animals, resulting in high-quality wool and meat. The garden is managed without pesticides or herbicides, relying instead on beneficial insects and natural plant resistance to pests. The farm also emphasizes energy efficiency and water conservation in its operations.
The Rest
The farm raises registered Coopworth sheep and Romeldale CVM wethers, with wool eligible for the Livestock Conservancy's Shave 'em to Save 'em campaign. They offer a range of wool products, including natural color and plant-dyed roving and yarn, felted soaps, dryer balls, and handknit felted handbags. Additionally, they have a small laying flock for on-farm egg sales and free-range Khaki Campbell ducks fed organic feed. The farm also produces garlic and handmade herbal soaps.
