About the Farm
Background
Backer Farm began in 1927 when Richard and Jessie Backer purchased 37 acres on Ironia Road. Richard, a successful painter and paper hanger, had always dreamed of owning a farm. Their son, Frederick Teets Backer, was born in the farmhouse in 1929 and developed a love for farming early on. Frederick and his older brother Joe started a dairy business, expanding it with a dairy barn and creamery in 1954. In 1971, the farm transitioned to a horse boarding facility, converting the dairy barn into horse stalls and adding an outdoor riding ring. The farm has remained in the family, now run by Frederick's grandson Derick and his family. Frederick Backer passed away in 2015, but his legacy continues through the farm's ongoing operations.
Practices
The farm emphasizes natural and ethical farming practices, growing their own hay, vegetables, and fresh eggs. They also raise pasture-raised pork and other meats. The interconnectedness of their farming methods ensures that the land is treated with respect, maintaining its health and productivity. The farm's produce includes a variety of vegetables such as arugula, beets, carrots, and tomatoes.
The Rest
The farm offers a range of jarred products like salad dressings, pickles, and jams. They run a CSA program, host Farm to Table events, and provide camp and after-school programs for the community. Seasonal activities include Pick Your Pumpkins and other fall events. The farm stand is open daily, and their products are available at local farmers' markets. The farm is closed to the public except for specific events.
