About the Farm
Background
Established in 1927 as a dairy farm, the operation initially sold milk to an agricultural co-op and delivered it locally using work horses. Transitioning from dairy in 1966, the farm raised beef cattle and grew vegetables until 1999, when Ed Barden opened a self-serve vegetable stand and introduced fall activities like pumpkin picking and hayrides. By 2001, the popularity of the stand led to the construction of a new vegetable stand and commercial kitchen, expanding the product line to include jams, relishes, and baked goods. In 2010, Cara Barden's return with an agriculture degree saw the launch of the farm's first CSA program. The farm's reach extended further in 2019 with the opening of a downtown New Hartford location, providing year-round access to their products.
Practices
The farm emphasizes the values of a family-run operation, maintaining its integrity through diverse crop production and a small amount of livestock. The CSA program has allowed for an expansion in crop variety, ensuring a wide selection of fresh produce. The farm's practices include growing approximately 40 different crops and producing homemade goods in their on-farm kitchen.
The Rest
Visitors can enjoy a range of homemade baked goods, jams, and other products, all fully licensed. The farm participates in local farmers markets and offers seasonal activities such as pick-your-own pumpkins and hayrides. The downtown New Hartford location provides community access to farm products year-round, and the farm continues to welcome visitors during the spring, summer, and fall months.
