About the Farm
Background
John Cox arrived with 30 head of cattle in late 2016, and today the farm has grown to 170 cows, calves, steers, and bulls. The farm is located next to Baseline Lake and the Huron River in Webster Township, Michigan, encompassing 260 acres of sandy soil with 190 acres dedicated to pastures and the remainder being wooded.
Practices
The farm operates as a cow/calf to finish operation, where calves are born every spring and grow until they are around 30 months or older. The herd consists of heritage breeds, primarily Ancient White Park cattle, a rare English breed. Cattle are moved daily to new paddocks and provided with free choice organic minerals. During winter, hay is fed to the herd. The farm is in its sixth year of transitioning from conventional row crops to perennial pastures, emphasizing regenerative agricultural practices.
The Rest
Quarter, half, and whole beef shares are available for purchase in October, November, and December. Beef can also be bought by the cut, with options including ground beef, various roasts, steaks, shanks, stew meat, bones for broth, suet, liver, heart, and kidney. All beef is USDA inspected and vacuum sealed.
