About the Farm
Background
Eric and Annabel began their farming journey in 2010 on a vacant lot in Lakewood, Ohio, using the SPIN (Small Plot INtensive) method to maximize vegetable production in a small space. By 2013, they moved to Cleveland and expanded their growing area to about 1/2 acre, focusing on intensive vegetable cultivation. Their journey from a proof of concept to a thriving urban farm has been marked by a commitment to quality and community engagement.
Practices
The farm adheres to organic growing practices, avoiding man-made pesticides and herbicides. Biodiversity is promoted to attract beneficial organisms, and crop rotation is practiced to reduce pest pressure. Plant-based compost is used to balance soil nutrients, and soil disturbance is minimized to maintain microbial life. Biological controls, such as pest barriers, companion planting, and hand cultivation, are employed to address issues and maintain plant and soil health.
The Rest
The farm primarily sells its produce through an online store, open from May to October, offering delivery and farm pick-up options. They collaborate with local chefs and food businesses, and host various events including an annual spring plant sale, flower bouquet making sessions, and 'Unplug at the farm' events. All plants for sale are started from seed on the farm, using local compost products and Cow Pots to ensure healthy growth and minimal transplant shock.
