About the Farm
Background
Founded by Bill Brammer in 1977, this farm began on twenty acres in the foothills of northern San Diego County. Initially, it was a grassroots movement, driven by a commitment to reduce the impact of toxic chemicals on humans, animals, and the environment. Over the years, it has grown to be nationally known for the quality and flavor of its heirloom tomatoes, strawberries, and green beans. Despite early skepticism from government agencies, the farm persisted and became a pioneer in the organic farming industry.
Practices
Certified by California Certified Organic Farmers (CCOF), the farm adheres to strict organic standards, avoiding synthetic pesticides, herbicides, and fertilizers. The farm focuses on improving soil quality to enhance the taste of its produce and increase plant resistance to disease. The unique micro-climate, just eight miles east of the Pacific Ocean, allows for year-round production of fresh, flavorful organic fruits and vegetables. The farm's methods emphasize healthy plants and rich soil, contributing to the reduction of pesticide residue in the environment.
The Rest
Local San Diegans can purchase produce directly from the farm through a CSA program or at local stores. The farm's produce is also available nationwide through wholesale markets. The farm's history is deeply rooted in the organic movement, inspired by concerns over the toxic accumulation of pesticides and synthetic fertilizers in the environment, as highlighted by Rachel Carson's 'Silent Spring'.
