About the Farm
Background
The farm's roots trace back to 1866 when Lars Severson immigrated from Norway and settled in Garfield Township, Illinois. Over the years, the farm has evolved from raising corn, soybeans, and pigs to focusing on organic grains. In 2004, the farm began transitioning 20 acres to organic production, and now boasts 400 acres certified organic by Oregon Tilth. The farm has remained a family operation, with each generation contributing to its growth and diversification.
Practices
The farm adheres to organic farming principles, avoiding synthetic chemicals and pesticides. Instead, they employ traditional methods like cultivation to manage weeds. The grains are grown, harvested, cleaned, stored, and stone-milled on the farm, ensuring they never leave the property until they are ready for sale. This approach maintains the integrity and quality of the heirloom grains.
The Rest
The farm offers online ordering and nationwide delivery of their products, which include specialty flours, meals, grits, rolled oats, and baked goods made from their grains. The family also maintains a separate website for recipes and farm updates. The farm's commitment to quality and tradition is evident in their meticulous processes and the involvement of multiple generations in daily operations.
