About the Farm
Background
Fifteen years ago, a couple purchased a 46-acre farm in the Appalachian mountains of Western North Carolina with a vision to restore its natural beauty. They adopted two boys from Russia and, in 2010, created Brothers On Farms to engage their children in farming. Initially starting with Shiitake mushrooms, the farm expanded to include lamb production in 2012. By 2014, they processed their first batch of USDA-inspected lamb, and the business has grown steadily since, gaining certifications and expanding their product offerings.
Practices
The farm adheres to strict Animal Welfare Approved and 100% Grass Fed standards. Their lambs are pasture-raised year-round, consuming no antibiotics, hormones, steroids, or medicated feeds. They drink fresh mountain water and breathe crisp mountain air. The Shiitake mushrooms are cultivated in pure mountain forest logs, sourced from a certified organic producer. The farm is also working on implementing gravity-fed waterers and subdividing pastures to improve grazing control and reduce feed costs.
The Rest
The farm offers free tours by appointment and sells their products directly from the farm and at local farmers markets. They plan to add fresh garlic, onions, and rosemary to their offerings. The farm's owner was selected for the prestigious NC Ag Leadership Program, which has helped connect them with industry leaders and funders. The farm emphasizes the importance of knowing the source and production methods of food, especially in light of health concerns and regulatory changes.
