About the Farm
Background
In 2006, Garry and Ming Adams acquired a 2,000-acre property in McElmo Canyon, southwestern Colorado, and named it Canyon of the Ancients Guest Ranch. They renovated historic buildings to preserve the area's rich legacy and landscape. Initially focused on creating a unique guest experience, they later expanded to raising beef cattle, sheep, and laying hens to provide fresh, high-welfare food for guests and local markets.
Practices
The ranch employs holistic management practices on 65 acres of irrigated pasture, avoiding pesticides. They use rotational grazing to maintain pasture health and minimize internal parasites. The cattle are a cross of Angus and Longhorn breeds, chosen for meat quality and hardiness. The sheep are Royal White and Navajo-Churro breeds, selected for their resilience and minimal shearing needs. The laying hens include Araucana, New Hampshire Red, and Barred Rock breeds, producing a variety of egg colors. The ranch is Animal Welfare Approved, ensuring high standards of animal welfare.
The Rest
Canyon of the Ancients Guest Ranch offers year-round lodging in private guesthouses, providing a blend of luxury and rustic charm. Guests can enjoy fresh farm produce, including eggs, beef, and lamb, available directly from the farm and at local retailers and restaurants in Cortez, Colorado. The ranch is situated near several notable attractions, including Mesa Verde, Hovenweep, and Bears Ear, making it an ideal destination for those interested in history, archaeology, and the natural beauty of southwestern Colorado.
