About the Farm

Background

Located on the southern slope of Mt. Ascutney in southeastern Vermont, Cas-Cad-Nac Farm has been actively breeding alpacas since 1997. Owned and operated by Ian and Jennifer Lutz, the farm maintains a herd of 200 to 300 alpacas and is widely recognized as one of the premier breeding-stock producers in the United States. The farm has won numerous awards, including the Futurity Large Breeder of the Year in 2012, 2017, 2018, 2019, and 2022, as well as Reserve Large Breeder of the Year in 2013 and 2014. Both Ian and Jennifer grew up in Vermont and started the farm after discovering alpacas in 1994.

Practices

The farm's alpacas are pastured year-round with access to shelter, grazing on lush pasture and hay, making them primarily grass-fed. The Lutzes co-own the Vermont Fiber Mill & Studio in Brandon, Vermont, where the majority of the farm's annual fiber clip is processed and sold. To maintain the highest quality herd, 30 to 40 animals are processed annually into a limited supply of fine meats. The alpacas are born and raised on the farm under the best conditions, ensuring high-quality meat that is inspected and stamped by the Vermont Agency of Agriculture.

The Rest

Cas-Cad-Nac Farm offers alpaca meat for sale both from the farm and through their online store, with shipping available. The meat is lean, high in protein, low in fat and cholesterol, and is compared to veal in flavor. The farm also supplies several fine-dining establishments with their alpaca meat. Customers can place orders online and pick them up at the farm by appointment.
