About the Farm
Background
The Common Ground Garden is an initiative by the Sisters of the Order of Saint Benedict in St. Joseph, Minnesota. Known for their commitment to community service and sustainable living, the Sisters have integrated this garden into their broader mission of responding to the needs of the Church and the world. The garden has become a local hub for fresh, healthful food and community engagement, with produce sold at local markets and events.
Practices
Utilizing cover crops, crop rotations, and compost, the garden employs methods that enhance soil health and biodiversity. Despite not being certified organic, they abstain from using chemical herbicides, pesticides, or fertilizers, ensuring that their produce is both safe and nutritious. This approach not only benefits the consumers but also fosters a healthier community and environment.
The Rest
The garden offers individual plots for community members, a CSA program, and various educational events such as pickling, cheese-making, and budgeting for local eating. They are dedicated to supporting the St. Joseph Food Shelf and the St. Cloud Catholic Charities Food Pantry, reinforcing their commitment to social justice and community support. Produce is available at the St. Joseph Farmers' Market, Minnesota Street Market, and Nick's Third Floor.
