About the Farm
Background
Located in Madison, just 5 miles north of Colgate University near the tip of Lake Moraine, this farm has become a cornerstone for local food enthusiasts. Throughout the growing season, members come directly to the farm to pick up their share of seasonally available produce, as well as a wide variety of pick-your-own (PYO) crops. The farm also offers neatly packed box shares delivered fresh to the Syracuse area. Members enjoy over 150 varieties of fresh vegetables, herbs, flowers, and small fruits. The farm is known for its commitment to providing healthy food and fostering community connections.
Practices
The farm employs sustainable growing practices, prioritizing soil health through a permanent raised bed tillage system and planting about a third of the farm to cover crops each year. They do not use synthetic pesticides or fertilizers, GMOs, irradiation, or sewage sludge. The farm values the Earth and strives to benefit its ecosystems in growing food. They also emphasize the importance of food justice, including fair wages for farm workers and access to healthy food for people of all income levels. The farm respectfully acknowledges the Oneida People, who have stewarded the land throughout the generations.
The Rest
Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) is a partnership of mutual commitment between farmers and a community of supporters. Shareholders commit to support the farm throughout the season, sharing both the risks and the bounty of growing food. This model fosters a direct relationship between the farmer and the community, promoting fair prices by eliminating the middleman. Members have the opportunity to volunteer on the farm, learn about new foods, and enjoy communal events. The farm's dedication to quality and variety has earned it high praise from members, who appreciate the fresh, seasonal produce and the sense of community it fosters.
