About the Farm

Background

Cycle Farm, located in the heart of Spearfish Valley in the northern Black Hills of South Dakota, has been farming full-time since 2012. Known for growing over 40 different crop types, the farm sells directly from their farm stand and supplies local restaurants and a CSA. The farm actively acknowledges its location on the ancestral lands of many diverse Indigenous cultures, specifically unceded treaty land of the Lakota people.

Practices

Cycle Farm employs no-till, full-circle farming practices that build soil health and grow food without chemicals. They prioritize growing open-pollinated and regional varieties, focusing on flavor and nutrition over ease of shipping and shelf-life. The farm seeks methods that limit off-farm inputs, enhance land health, and encourage ecological diversity. Community engagement and education about the local food system are also central to their philosophy.

The Rest

Cycle Farm offers a variety of products at their farm stand, including fresh-picked produce, eggs, dried herbs, teas, seeds, and hand-crafted wooden kitchen utensils. They also provide you-pick herbs and flowers, spring plant starts, and block print note cards. The farm stand operates from late April through October on Saturday mornings and Thursday evenings. The farm fosters community resilience by growing food for neighbors and promoting the region's agricultural roots. Jeremy Smith and Trish Jenkins, the farm's stewards, bring diverse backgrounds in ecology, geology, and various crafts to their farming practice.
