About the Farm
Background
Dahle Orchards was established in 1984 by Timothy Dahle. Located in the shadow of Mount Hood and overlooking the Columbia River, the farm spans 380 acres of high-density, pedestrian orchards. Known for producing some of the finest sweet cherries, the farm has adapted to changes in the cherry industry and continues to focus on fruit quality, food safety, worker safety, and sustainability.
Practices
Certified by GLOBAL G.A.P. for food safety and sustainable practices, the farm employs many organic methods and has significant acreage in organic transition. To control orchard pests naturally, they have built and placed two hundred houses for owls, kestrels, bats, and small insectivores like bluebirds and wrens. Additionally, they have established flowers and host plants for beneficial insect predators. The 'pedestrian' system allows for fruit picking without ladders, enhancing worker safety and efficiency.
The Rest
The farm produces a variety of cherries including Chelan, Bing, Sweetheart, Benton, Regina, Rainier, Early Robin, and Skeena cherries. By planting early varieties at low elevations and late varieties at elevations up to 2400 feet, they ensure a harvest season that extends from June through early August. Cherries have a rich history and are known for their health benefits, including cancer-preventive components like fiber, vitamin C, carotenoids, and anthocyanins.
