About the Farm
Background
Dayspring Farm, located in the beautiful countryside of King and Queen County, Virginia, was originally started by the Jackson family and later owned by the Trevillions. The Maloney family purchased the farm in 1987 and transitioned it to organic farming practices. The farm, which once spanned 100 acres, now consists of 18 acres, with 14 acres currently in production. Over the years, the farm has become a family-centered operation, with several of the Maloney children still helping.
Practices
Dayspring Farm operates on principles of ecological sustainable agriculture, focusing on building healthy soil through compost and natural soil amendments. The farm employs cover crops, natural pest control, and crop rotation. Specific pest control strategies include handpicking, row covers, succession planting, and attracting beneficial insects, avoiding pest control sprays to protect neighboring bee hives. The farm uses a variety of equipment, including tractors, tillers, and seeders, and has facilities such as a wash/pack barn, irrigation shed, storage sheds, a greenhouse, and unheated hoophouses. Drip irrigation is used on about half of the 16 acres.
The Rest
Dayspring Farm offers on-farm pick-up and delivery to the Williamsburg and Middle Peninsula areas through its CSA program. The farm also sells produce to several restaurants and provides internships and farm tours. The presence of bee hives on the farm has significantly improved cucurbit pollination.
