About the Farm
Background
Dickie Bros. Orchard has been in the same family since 1752 when England's King George II sold three tracts of land to their Great, Great, Great, Great Grandfather James Dickie. The family has been farming this land for 272 years and 9 generations. Tom and Emilie Dickie Bruguiere played a crucial role in maintaining and expanding the farm, purchasing over 500 acres of the original lands. The farm is one of the oldest family-owned and operated farms in the USA.
Practices
As a conventional grower, the farm holds the USDA H-Gap Certification for food safety. They specialize in growing a variety of fruits including 20 different varieties of apples and 8 varieties of peaches, as well as nectarines, blackberries, sweet potatoes, pumpkins, and corn. The farm also raises beef cattle. The cool mountain air of the Blue Ridge Mountains contributes to the excellent color and flavor of their apples.
The Rest
The farm operates two farm stands in Nelson County and vends at 3-4 local farmers markets. They offer 'Pick Your Own Apples' experiences and sell fresh sweet cider, jellies, and apple butter made from their produce. The farm also hosts events such as the Cider, Blues & BBQ Festival and offers a historic farm venue, Castle Hall Weddings, for special occasions.
