About the Farm
Background
Dorothy's Range spans 50 acres and includes a trout stream, wildlife pond, tall grass prairie, upland short grass prairie, burr oak savannah, sedge meadow, pig pasture, and large gardens. The farm's evolution is supported by Dorothy, whose love and willingness have been instrumental. April, with a decade of farming experience, started as an organic veggie farmer and has managed various farming projects, including a CSA. Steve's business, Indigenous Restorations LLC, engages with the natural environment and works with private landowners and conservation organizations.
Practices
The farm employs a patch burn graze method to restore the prairie and raises pigs on organic local feed, nuts, and veggies. The pigs are encouraged to graze, which contributes to a more flavorful pork. The farm prioritizes the pigs' grazing ability, lightness on the land, and the quality of their marbled meat. Most of the acres are set aside for native habitat. Steve's expertise in invasive removal, plant identification, prairie burns, and seeding supports the farm's ecological practices.
The Rest
Dorothy's Range offers farm-stays, workshops on various topics like fermentation, birding, fishing, and swine management, and hands-on farm experience and education. The farm features a renovated barn for small events, and visitors can explore the area with guided fly fishing tours. Seasonal changes bring diverse activities and produce, from asparagus and green garlic in spring to pumpkins and nuts in fall. The farm also offers heritage pork, feeders, and breeding stock.
