About the Farm

Background

Drift Farmstead, located in the hills of Vermont, is known for its deep connection to the natural world and its commitment to organic and regenerative farming practices. The farm is home to The Vermont Farm and Forest School, founded by Misse Axelrod, who has over 20 years of experience in sustainable agriculture and education. The farm's mission extends beyond agriculture, aiming to educate children and families about food, farming, and nutrition through various on-farm experiences.

Practices

At Drift Farmstead, everything is rooted in healthy soil. They employ regenerative organic practices to grow and raise food, avoiding chemicals and pesticides. Key methods include interplanting crops to diversify fields, growing cover crops to naturally enrich the soil, and using no-till or low-till methods to maintain soil integrity. Intensive grazing for livestock ensures animals have constant access to fresh pasture, which helps build soil and sequester carbon. These practices enhance biodiversity, improve the water cycle, and increase climate resiliency.

The Rest

Drift Farmstead offers a unique farm stay experience at their newly built Raven Wood Cabin, providing a space for solitude, relaxation, and rejuvenation. The farm also runs a Farm Store, selling organic vegetables and grass-fed meats, and hosts community events through partnerships with organizations like NOFA-VT. Their educational programs at The Vermont Farm and Forest School emphasize the interconnectedness of farming practices, ecology, and human health, offering immersive experiences in nature.
