About the Farm
Background
ECO City Farms is rooted in two working-class Port Towns communities in Prince George's County. Known for addressing historic injustices and fostering inter-generational and multi-cultural collaboration, the farm has become a place-based institution dedicated to increasing access to fresh, healthy, and affordable food. By restoring the dignity of farmwork and the land, ECO City Farms challenges societal norms that stigmatize manual labor and undervalue green spaces.
Practices
ECO City Farms operates two farms—Edmonston Farm and Bladensburg Farm—where they produce sustainably-grown vegetables and healthy soil through intensive urban farming that replicates a healthy ecosystem. Their farming methods focus on creating a bio-diverse ecosystem to nourish plants and animals, and they emphasize the importance of producing healthy soil. The farm's practices include composting, vermiculture, and the use of renewable energy and materials reuse. They also engage in reshaping land-use policy to encourage local agriculture and promote environmental protection.
The Rest
ECO City Farms offers farm apprenticeships that provide hands-on involvement in farming and composting operations, as well as weekly volunteer hours from March to November. They partner with local groups like the Port Towns Youth Council to engage youth apprentices and teach Urban Agriculture courses in collaboration with Prince George's Community College. The farm's produce is available through winter and summer CSA programs and is sold year-round at the Riverdale Park Farmers Market. ECO City Farms is committed to diversity and inclusion, ensuring a respectful and embracing environment for all participants.
