About the Farm
Background
In 2005, the founder transitioned from owning a bagel shop to investing in a hydroponic greenhouse. Initial challenges included a poorly advised indoor setup and numerous pest and disease issues. After relocating to a 3000 sq foot greenhouse in The Dalles, Oregon, and partnering with Whole Foods Market and Rosauers, the business stabilized. Over twelve years, the farm became known for its high-quality basil, harvesting 2.5 tons in one summer. The business was sold to Mark Barton in 2017, who expanded the operation.
Practices
Using hydroponic growing methods, the greenhouse operates without pesticides and maintains organic certification. The focus is on cultivating herbs, particularly basil, along with head lettuce and spinach.
The Rest
The farm produces from April to November and has a strong relationship with major grocery stores. The founder expressed interest in creating basil essential oil for various products. The farm's journey involved overcoming significant challenges, leading to a successful and sustainable operation.
