About the Farm

Background

The orchards at Fat Robin Orchard & Farm have existed in one form or another since the 1930s and have been certified organic since 2000, the first cherry orchard to be certified in the State of Montana. Lise Rousseau and Albert Silva have cared for the orchards since 2004, making them the fifth owners of the farm on the crest of Finley Point.

Practices

The farm specializes in sweet cherry varietals, including Lambert, Rainier, Lapin, and Van, as well as pie cherries like Montmorency and Balaton. They also grow Macintosh apples and heirloom Wealthy apples, planted by the original owners' sister, Elsie, back in the '30s. The farm management scheme includes grazing sheep where and when appropriate, maintaining a permanent flock of six and their lambs. The unique glacial till soils, cool summer nights, long summer days, pristine air, and the 'lake effect' create perfect growing conditions for their fruit.

The Rest

The orchard is open to the public in season for u-pick and farmstand sales. They take orders throughout western Montana, ship around the country, and can be found at Montana CSAs and natural food stores in season. The farm also offers sheep and their wool for sale when available. Visitors are invited to admire the views of Polson Bay, the Mission Mountains, Skidoo Bay, the Swan Range, and the gateway to Glacier National Park. Additionally, the farm produces a variety of cherry and apple products, including unsweetened dried cherries, freeze-dried cherries, cherry or apple reduction, cherry wine vinegar, and artisanal jams and jellies.
