About the Farm

Background

Located 30 miles southwest of Lexington, KY, this small family-owned farm has been dedicated to raising Katahdin sheep and laying hens. Known for their commitment to animal welfare, they have been GAP 4 Animal Welfare Certified since March 2017, ensuring that their animals are raised without antibiotics, added hormones, or animal by-products. The farm markets fresh, vacuum-packed, USDA-inspected lamb to customers in Kentucky, Ohio, and surrounding states, and their products can be found at Whole Foods Markets in KY and Ohio, Dorothy Lane Market in Dayton, OH, and Marksbury Farm Market in Lancaster, KY.

Practices

The farm practices rotational grazing, allowing their sheep and hens to graze on abundant forage in the Bluegrass region. The sheep are never given antibiotics or added hormones and maintain an all-vegetarian diet. The hens range freely, contributing to the farm's holistic approach to animal care and land stewardship. The Katahdin sheep, a hardy and thrifty breed, thrive on a forage-based diet and do not require shearing, producing excellent gourmet quality meat.

The Rest

The farm emphasizes animal care, land stewardship, relationships, and integrity, believing these tenets contribute to a good life for their animals, family, and community. They have been awarded a USDA Local Food Promotion Program grant to expand their operations by hiring additional staff. The farm also shares stories and insights about sheep farming, food, and daily life through posts by Lynn Pruett.
