About the Farm

Background

Gardendwellers Farm & Ranch began its journey in 2001 as a fresh culinary herb farm established by Holly and Barry Mawby. Adam Mawby, who later found his passion in raising Katahdin sheep and Red Angus cattle, started Gardendwellers Ranch in 2019. The farm evolved through several relocations and expansions, finally settling on 45 acres in Souris, North Dakota in 2022. The farm honors the legacy of Holly Mawby, who passed away in 2021, by continuing her work and planting Royal Frost Birch trees in her memory.

Practices

The farm employs rotational grazing for their Katahdin hair sheep to enhance soil, plant, and animal health. Freedom Ranger broiler chickens are raised in moveable 'chicken tractor' pens, allowing them to forage on fresh pasture daily. These practices ensure the production of nutrient-dense food. The farm also grows over 30 different kinds of herbs, which are freeze-dried to maintain their fresh flavor year-round. The farm's philosophy emphasizes the interconnectedness of healthy soil, plants, and animals.

The Rest

Gardendwellers Farm & Ranch offers USDA inspected lamb cuts, whole and half lambs, and occasionally breeding stock. Their culinary herbs and herbal teas are available seasonally at the Bottineau Farmers Market, and they sell large cloved hardneck garlic every August through fall. Apryl Mawby creates herbal skin care products, including soap, salves, and lip balms, using farm-grown herbs. The farm maintains a Retail Food License and operates under North Dakota's Cottage Food Law, with plans to establish a commercial kitchen to expand their herb business nationwide. They also plan to host Agritourism events and Farm to Table dinners in the future.
