About the Farm
Background
Gibbs Road Farm, the original farm-site and home of Cultivate Kansas City, has been a cornerstone of urban agriculture since its inception. Cultivate Kansas City began in 2005 as the Kansas City Center for Urban Agriculture, aiming to promote urban farming to feed city neighborhoods. Over the years, it has evolved into a vital resource provider and advocate for urban food production, working closely with local government and community leaders to support and expand urban agriculture. The farm is also a host for the Growing Growers Apprenticeship program and participates in Kansas City's bi-annual Urban Farms and Gardens Tour.
Practices
The farm adheres to certified organic farming practices, emphasizing the cultivation of heirloom varieties and the integration of diverse crops. The commitment to organic farming is rooted in values of diversity, interconnectedness, and life, aiming to make a positive impact on the ecosystem. The farm's practices are informed by the traditions of indigenous peoples who have stewarded the land for thousands of years, striving to improve sustainability and agricultural stewardship.
The Rest
Gibbs Road Farm sells its produce at the Brookside Farmers Market in Kansas City, MO, and supplies several locally-owned restaurants. The farm operates a CSA program that runs for 42 weeks each year and welcomes volunteers by appointment. Additionally, the farm houses the Quell-Davis Community Greenhouse and actively engages in policy issues as a member of the Food Policy Coalition of Greater Kansas City.
