About the Farm
Background
The owners grew up in South Africa, spending time on their grandparents' farms, where they learned the importance of knowing where food comes from. After moving to the USA in 1999, they pursued careers as a veterinarian and IT professional but continued to dream of farming. In 2013, an apprenticeship at Stone Barns Center for Food and Agriculture reignited their passion for sheep farming. They purchased Gibraltar Farm at the end of 2013 and began farming full-time in June 2015.
Practices
The farm raises registered Katahdin hair sheep on 100% perennial pastures and grass/legume hay, without any grain added to their diets. They practice management-intensive rotational grazing, moving sheep to fresh grass daily to optimize grazing and land recovery. During winter, the sheep are fed hay and housed in a barn. The farm focuses on breeding stock that is efficient in grazing, parasite-resistant, and capable of growing well on forage. They collect various performance data and use it to select the top breeding animals.
The Rest
The farm sells live meat lambs on a reservation basis, with different weights available throughout the growing season. Customers can pick up the animals on the farm or arrange for delivery to a processor. The farm also produces and sells bulk raw honey, harvested twice a year from bees that forage on wildflowers.
