About the Farm

Background

Located in Boulder, Colorado, the farm has become known for its commitment to producing high-quality beef while simultaneously healing and caring for prairie ecosystems. By partnering with various organizations and local authorities, the farm has established itself as a leader in grassland stewardship and community collaboration.

Practices

The cattle graze on both public and private land and are strategically moved multiple times a day to ensure access to fresh forage and allow pastures time to regrow. This method mimics the natural grazing patterns of bison, which once roamed the native prairie. As the cattle move, they fertilize the land with manure and stimulate perennial grasses to regrow, building deep, strong root systems. These practices improve soil health, sequester carbon, and regenerate landscapes to a more balanced and native state.

The Rest

The farm collaborates with the Humane Society of the United States, Mad Agriculture, Prairie Preserves, City of Boulder Open Space and Mountain Parks, Ollin Farms, and Boulder County Parks and Open Space through initiatives like the Shared Learning Collaborative and Project 95. These partnerships aim to build a more resilient public land base and combat invasive weeds that threaten the function and beauty of open spaces. The return of native grasses such as blue grama, sideoats grama, and big bluestem is a testament to the success of their grazing practices.
