About the Farm
Background
Mother and daughter team Gail and FL purchased the land that would become Grassroots Farm in late summer of 2007, starting with planting garlic in fall 2008. Since 2009, they have participated in various farmers' markets in Milwaukee, Chicago, and Monroe, Wisconsin, and began a CSA share program in 2010 that served up to 80 families. They have been wholesaling tomatoes since 2009 and continue to work with local restaurants and seek new partnerships. After a break in 2017, they are now involved in a new food system model focused on equity and resilience.
Practices
Grassroots Farm operates with a commitment to chemical-free farming, growing all vegetables from seed to harvest and raising livestock from day-old to processing. They emphasize community relationships and local partnerships with fellow farmers, cheese-makers, bakers, and restaurateurs. The farm also offers resources such as certified organic vegetable seedling production, pasture rental, and custom crop production, including organic certification for certain crops.
The Rest
Grassroots Farm acknowledges that their land is within the Traditional Territory of The Ho-Chunk Nation. They are open to discussing potential partnerships and collaborations, offering services like custom cut flower production for special events, certified organic CBD hemp production, and pastured livestock or poultry production.
