About the Farm
Background
Harvest Home Meats, located in the northeastern edge of the Lehigh Valley, Pennsylvania, has roots in the DiFebo and Ott families, who have farmed in the region for centuries. The transformation into a grass-based farm began in 1994 under Richard DiFebo, who married into the Ott family. Initially a hobby, the farm grew from a small experimental pursuit with ten dairy cows to a full-fledged business selling grass-fed beef directly to consumers. By 2008, after obtaining a USDA license, they expanded to selling beef by the cut to local health food stores. The farm's history is marked by a commitment to grass-based farming and a return to traditional agricultural practices.
Practices
Harvest Home Meats employs rotational grazing, where cattle are moved between small grass plots to ensure even grazing and pasture recovery. The farm avoids chemical fertilizers, insecticides, and herbicides, and the cattle are never given growth hormones or antibiotics. During the growing season, the cattle graze on pasture, and in dormant months, they are fed hay. This method promotes lush, beneficial grass growth and reduces the presence of undesirable grasses. The farm's practices emphasize the health of the land and the ethical treatment of animals.
The Rest
Harvest Home Meats offers mixed quarters, halves, wholes, or select cuts of beef, with options for pickup or delivery. The farm's beef has been recognized for its quality, winning the 2008 PASA Grass-Fed Beef Cook-off. The farm is conveniently located near major urban centers like Philadelphia and New York City. The DiFebo family, including Richard, his wife Lynn, and their sons Dane and Dohl, are actively involved in the farm's operations, continuing a legacy of family farming and direct consumer sales.
