About the Farm
Background
Hens' Haven has built a strong customer base due to the quality of their products and their commitment to customer satisfaction. They are known for their Brahma bantams and have a project to develop Large Fowl Black Brahmas. The farm also raises pastured beef heifers, preferring to sell them privately rather than to stockyards. The farm's history includes a dedication to animal welfare, as evidenced by the care given to their retired horses, Ginger and Comanche.
Practices
Eggs are collected often and brushed but never washed to maintain the natural 'bloom' that keeps bacteria out and freshness in. The farm does not kill extra male chicks and raises only Black and Buff bantam Brahmas. They never force-molt their flock and provide a varied and enriched environment for their hens. The farm participates in the NPIP program, with birds tested yearly. Pastured beef heifers are raised on hay, sweet feed, and minerals, with access to 11 acres of pasture, two ponds, and a separate water trough.
The Rest
Due to Covid restrictions and biosecurity issues, farm visits are no longer offered. The farm provides fertile eggs for hatching and can hatch clutches by special order. They emphasize animal welfare over convenience or profitability. An update on their horses, Ginger and Comanche, notes their humane euthanization and burial under newly planted apple trees on the farm.
