About the Farm
Background
Farmer Stephen Pedersen began his farming journey working for his aunt and uncle in Aptos before leasing his first 3 acres in 1997 to grow mixed vegetables for a small CSA. The farm expanded to 40 acres by 2016. Since 2000, Stephen and his wife Jeanne have lived on a unique property along Harkins Slough in Watsonville, which includes both conservation and agricultural easements. Over 23 years, they cultivated a wide variety of high-quality produce and were recognized for their habitat restoration efforts and environmental approach to farming. They received the AWQA Stewardship Award in 2009 and were finalists for the Leopold Conservation Award in 2012 and 2013.
Practices
The farm is certified organic by California Certified Organic Farmers (CCOF) and uses only organic fertilizers, soil amendments, compost, and cover cropping to enhance soil fertility. They emphasize taking care of the land through the use of lush hedgerows of native vegetation to protect adjacent hillsides and waterways. Produce is typically harvested the day before market to ensure maximum freshness and nutritional value. The farm also employs cover cropping with bell beans, vetch, peas, and rye to maintain soil health.
The Rest
In the summer, blueberry picking is available by appointment at the Watsonville farm. The farm is currently shifting its focus to habitat restoration and producing native grass seeds for local projects. They are taking a break from selling produce and participating in the Mountain View Farmers Market in 2023.
