About the Farm
Background
In 1901, two sisters, Charlotte Drinkwater and Mary Drinkwater Warren, established a self-sustaining school for poor and homeless boys on their farm in Greenwich, Massachusetts. In 1927, with the flooding of the Swift River Valley to create the Quabbin Reservoir imminent, the school moved to its present location in Marlborough. Until the 1980s, the farm was central to the school's existence, with boys growing crops and raising cattle, pigs, and chickens to provide food for the entire community.
Practices
The farm does not use pesticides or herbicides, ensuring the most beneficial produce for students and patrons. The boys participate in daily chores for the animals, seeding in the greenhouse and garden in the spring, and harvesting in the fall.
The Rest
The farm has recently started a CSA to share its produce with the local community, including eggs, flowers, and herbs. It operates as a hobby farm and serves as an educational tool for the students. Visitors are welcome, and the farm is always looking for good volunteers or interns.
