About the Farm
Background
Located between Edwards and Bovina along the Big Black River, the farm was meticulously planned over four years by Mr. and Mrs. Hixson. They began with a three-acre plot, focusing on organic farming methods and heirloom seeds. Over time, they built a clientele that includes a health food store in Florida and a few small restaurants.
Practices
The farm emphasizes organic growing techniques, using heirloom seeds whenever possible to ensure quality and taste. They have also planted fruit, nut, and olive trees and are in the process of adding chickens and more produce. Plans include the construction of hoop houses to extend the growing season and implementing a water-catching system.
The Rest
The farm has recently expanded by purchasing a new 20-acre plot that has never been farmed. They are working on clearing fields, installing a well, and building homes for animals. Mrs. Hixson is producing herbs for teas and working on canned goods like pickled peppers and farm salsa. Educational opportunities related to permaculture will be offered in the future.
