About the Farm
Background
Brian Thomson began beekeeping at the age of 11, volunteering at the Cranbrook Nature Center in Michigan. By 16, he started Thomson Assembled Beehives, selling ready-to-use beekeeping equipment. After a hiatus, Brian and his wife Karen returned to beekeeping in 2016, inspired by family members. Starting with just two hives, they expanded to 140 hives by 2024, turning their passion into a full-time business.
Practices
The farm maintains hives in multiple locations around North Barrington, Lake Zurich, Barrington Hills, Lake Barrington, and Wacounda, IL. They focus on producing pure, local, and raw honey, ensuring that all products come directly from their own hives. The beekeeping practices emphasize the health and productivity of the bees, contributing to the local ecosystem.
The Rest
The farm offers a variety of honey products including honeycomb, creamed honey, pollen, beeswax candles, food saver wraps, and lip balm. Their honey won first place in a taste test competition at the Barrington Hills Fall Festival in 2019. They also sell honeybees, including queens, packages of bees, and nucs. Additionally, they participate in local farmers markets and offer beekeeping classes.
