About the Farm

Background

Founded in 1942 by Clarence and Florence Jordan and Martin and Mabel England, this community gained national attention in the 1950s for its commitment to pacifism and racial equality, enduring violence and boycotts. Notable figures like Martin Luther King, Jr. and Dorothy Day collaborated with them during the Civil Rights Movement. The community also birthed Habitat for Humanity and the Fuller Center for Housing. Over the decades, they have continued to focus on social justice, community living, and sustainable farming.

Practices

The farm employs regenerative agricultural practices, raising 100% grass-fed beef and pastured pork without antibiotics, growth hormones, pesticides, de-wormers, or synthetic fertilizers. They grow a variety of vegetables, flowers, and herbs on 2 acres while restoring soil on an additional 3 acres. The 92 acres of pecan orchards are managed using biological methods such as fish emulsifiers, microbials, and compost teas, avoiding chemical pesticides, insecticides, and herbicides. This approach aims to restore life to the entire ecosystem.

The Rest

The farm offers a formational discipleship intern program, hospitality to thousands of visitors annually, and travels to share their story. They run a mail-order business featuring pecan products and other goods, and provide U-pick blueberries and muscadine/scuppernong grapes grown without chemicals. The community is guided by a mission to provide nourishing food, offer hands-on education, and build community through food and farming.
