About the Farm
Background
Designed by Lloyd Fischel, this commercial operation is the first of its kind on the island of Maui. In May 2013, the farm co-sponsored a dialogue between top experts from the U.S. and Japan to address bee colony collapse disorder (CCD). Hawaii, once the largest honey producer at the turn of the 20th century, now produces the most queen bees shipped worldwide.
Practices
The farm employs biological filtration and rainwater runoff channeled from adjoining nursery structures to maintain a healthy environment for fish. They are committed to improving bee health and protecting the environment, advocating against the use of harmful pesticides like neonicotinoids. The farm also utilizes cedar oil for safe and natural pest control, avoiding chemical poisons.
The Rest
The farm is a member of the Alliance for Sustainable Aquaculture (ASA), which promotes Recirculating Aquaculture Systems (RAS) as a sustainable seafood source. They have been involved in international dialogues and research on bee health, including the dangers of pesticides to pollinators. The farm's efforts include co-producing educational films and hosting expert roundtables to further knowledge on sustainable practices.
