About the Farm
Background
Lansing Roots, a program of the Greater Lansing Food Bank (GLFB), was established to help beginning farmers in the Greater Lansing area start successful farming enterprises. The program is part of GLFB's broader mission to address food insecurity and has been instrumental in supporting historically under-served and refugee farmers.
Practices
The incubator farm setting provides land and infrastructure, farm resources, and business planning and development support. The program emphasizes a community-supported agriculture (CSA) model, where produce is grown by over 20 beginning farmers. This approach not only aids in the economic development of new farmers but also connects them directly with consumers, fostering a local food system.
The Rest
The Lansing Roots CSA offers three different produce subscriptions, catering to various household needs. By participating in the CSA, subscribers support the GLFB and contribute to food security in the region. The program also includes a marketing collective that provides sales opportunities for the farmers, ensuring they have a platform to sell their produce.
