About the Farm

Background

Inspired by the agricultural heritage of the land, Lazy Eight Stock Farm began its journey in 1947 with Carla’s great-uncles. In 1979, Lothar and Carla Baumann started selling sweet corn at the Berea Farmers Market. Bryce, their son, became the first full-time farmer in four generations, learning to raise produce, livestock, and eggs without synthetic inputs. The farm ceased tobacco production in 1997 and sold its last group of conventional feeder calves in 2011. Joining the USDA Certified Organic Program in 2012, the farm launched its CSA, which has become the lifeblood of the farm.

Practices

Lazy Eight Stock Farm employs holistic farming practices rooted in biological systems, working in harmony with plants, animals, insects, soils, and humans. The farm transitioned to Certified Organic in 2013, emphasizing ecological balance and nurturing the land. The team includes full-time year-round farmers and seasonal workers, with participation in the H2A Guest Worker program to manage the increased workload during the growing season.

The Rest

The farm is supported by community partners such as the Community Farm Alliance, The Organic Association of Kentucky, and the Kentucky Farm Share Coalition. They also participate in the Fresh Rx for MOMs program, providing fresh, locally grown fruits and vegetables to expectant mothers receiving Medicaid. The Baumann family, including Bryce, his wife Anna, and their children, continue to uphold the farm's values and commitment to the community.
