About the Farm
Background
The farm, located just outside Mercer, Pennsylvania, has been in the family since the early 1940s when the paternal grandparents moved from Parkman, Ohio. Initially focused on dairy and crops, the farm expanded over the decades to become one of the largest dairies in Mercer County by the 1970s. After downsizing in the mid-1990s, the farm transitioned to growing a variety of vegetables and fruits, with David and Elliott Lengel continuing the family tradition alongside a dedicated team.
Practices
The farm employs a range of naturally grown practices, including crop rotation, cover cropping, integrated pest management (IPM), plasticulture, raised beds, and drip irrigation. High tunnels and greenhouses extend the growing season, while pollinator fields support bee populations. The farm also grows its own feed for animals and remains committed to environmentally sound and pollinator-friendly methods.
The Rest
The farm offers a CSA (Community Supported Agriculture) program, providing seasonal produce boxes to local families. They also sell pasture-raised beef and hogs, as well as tree fruit from Dawson's Orchards. The farm's produce is available at several farm stands and through partnerships with local food service companies.
