About the Farm

Background

Light of Day Organics has been recognized as a 'Michigan Small Business of the Year' and is known for its dedication to producing high-quality loose leaf teas. The farm is certified Organic by Stellar Certification Services, certified Demeter Biodynamic, and a licensed Fair Trade partner with Transfair USA. Visitors are welcomed year-round to their retail tea shop to enjoy complimentary cups of tea.

Practices

The farm employs certified Organic and Demeter Biodynamic practices, ensuring the highest standards of ecological and sustainable farming. They grow and process their tea on-site, from harvesting to packaging, maintaining a closed-loop system that respects the land. The farm's tea plants are trained into 'clump' style bushes through a process called 'frame formation,' which involves pruning and pegging to create a consistent 'plucking table' for harvesting. The farm's wells are tested annually for contaminants to ensure the purity of the water used in irrigation and tea preparation.

The Rest

Light of Day Organics offers a variety of tea styles, including White, Green, Oolong, and Black teas, as well as Tisanes. They host advanced tea classes and educational events to share their knowledge about teas and botanicals. The farm features four High Tunnel Hoop houses dedicated to growing Camellia sinensis plants. Their pristine, hand-harvested ingredients are grown at two USDA Certified Organic and Demeter-certified Biodynamic farms in Leelanau County.
