About the Farm
Background
Founded in 1972, the farm began as a backyard garden and evolved into a full-fledged operation known for its organic practices. Over the years, it has rejuvenated worn-out tobacco land into fertile, productive gardens. The farm has been a staple in the Triangle area for over 35 years, participating in farm tours, teaching workshops, and mentoring young farmers.
Practices
The farm employs organic soil-building practices such as composting, cover cropping, and crop rotation to maintain soil fertility. They encourage a diverse ecosystem to foster beneficial insects and use approved organic pest control products. Drip irrigation is primarily used to conserve water. Although no longer certified organic, the farm continues to adhere to the same rigorous standards, focusing on soil health and ecosystem balance.
The Rest
Produce is available at Weaver Street in Hillsborough, Durham Farmers Markets, through a CSA, and an online store. Medicinal herbs are available by order only. The farm spans 80 acres, with 20 acres tillable and 50 forested, creating a balanced ecosystem. They also produce botanical products, skincare, tea blends, and functional foods from their own herbs.
