About the Farm
Background
Marathon Farm, located in the Brewerytown neighborhood of North Philadelphia, emerged from the initiative Marathon Loves Philadelphia, a 501c3 non-profit organization. The farm was established to address the issue of over 40,000 vacant properties in Philadelphia, many of which are in areas lacking access to fresh produce. By transforming these vacant lands into productive urban farms, the organization aims to enhance community food security and beautify blighted areas.
Practices
Marathon Farm employs organic farming methods to cultivate produce on 15,000 square feet of reclaimed land. The farm integrates educational programming for youth and adults, focusing on nutrition, environmental stewardship, and sustainability. Activities include cooking demonstrations, nutrition lectures, composting workshops, gardening series, and food preservation workshops. The farm also features a 20-plot community garden, a community gathering space, neighborhood composting, and a rainwater catchment system. Additionally, the farm is committed to using recycled materials and donations to minimize costs and environmental impact.
The Rest
Marathon Farm sells its produce at an affordable farm stand on-site, with a portion also supplied to Marathon Restaurants in Center City Philadelphia. The farm is open to the public, encouraging community participation and learning about food cultivation. The organization is also developing a DIY guide to urban gardening, suitable for various urban settings such as backyards, rooftops, vacant lots, or fire escapes. The farm's infrastructure includes raised beds, a greenhouse, a high tunnel, a tool shed, and a community space. The project emphasizes the importance of urban agriculture in fostering community, education, and a healthier lifestyle.
