About the Farm
Background
The MSU Student Organic Farm spans 10 acres and has established itself as a hub for both education and production. Known for its comprehensive approach to organic farming, it serves multiple markets including a 48-week CSA, a Summer CSA, a 7-month on-campus farm stand, and sales to MSU dining halls.
Practices
The farm employs passive solar greenhouses, also known as hoophouses, to ensure a steady supply of fresh produce throughout the year. This method allows for the efficient use of solar energy to maintain optimal growing conditions, even during colder months. The farm's commitment to organic practices is evident in its certification and its focus on diversified production of vegetables, flowers, fruits, and herbs.
The Rest
In addition to its farming activities, the farm runs an intensive 9-month Organic Farmer Training Program (OFTP). This program is designed to educate and train individuals in year-round organic farming, emphasizing diversified production for local markets.
