About the Farm
Background
Paul and Cyndi Muller have been passionate about history and homesteading since the late 1970s. In 2002, they purchased 10.8 acres in Northwest Illinois, where they have been steadily rebuilding the old farm to sustain their family. Known for their dedication to preserving heritage breeds and traditional farming methods, they offer a glimpse into the past with their living history programs and farm tours.
Practices
The farm prioritizes organic farming methods, growing a variety of fresh produce and herbs without synthetic chemicals. Heritage chickens, turkeys, and geese roam freely, contributing to a balanced ecosystem. The Mullers also raise pastured pork and free-range poultry. They emphasize self-sufficiency, preserving food through canning, freezing, and drying, and use many of their herbs in handmade soaps and lotions. The farm also features apple orchards, supplemented with cherry, plum, and peach trees, as well as grape vines.
The Rest
Visitors can participate in farm tours that offer hands-on experiences and historical insights. Paul Muller, an experienced living historian, offers classes in blacksmithing, woodworking, and other traditional crafts. Cyndi Muller shares her expertise in gardening, preserving, and fiber arts, with classes available in these skills. The farm also sells handmade products such as soaps, lotions, and hand-spun yarns. The Mullers are dedicated to educating others about homesteading and the importance of heritage breeds and traditional farming practices.
