About the Farm
Background
Nettle Valley Farm is a 70-acre farm in Spring Grove, MN, with a mission to raise the best pastured pork possible, increase the resilience and biodiversity of the land, be good neighbors, and pay it forward. Dayna Burtness, who farms full-time and manages day-to-day operations, is the sixth generation in her family to farm in Houston County, MN. Nick Nguyen supports the farm with crucial tasks such as accounting, bookkeeping, and cooking, alongside his full-time off-farm job.
Practices
The farm raises Hampshire/Yorkshire/Duroc hogs on lush, diverse pastures, feeding them a certified organic diet of field peas and barley, which is corn, soy, and fishmeal free. The pigs also consume culled produce from a partner organic vegetable farm, adding depth to the pork's flavor. The pigs have ample space to roam, play, and access fresh water, grazing on clover, grasses, nettles, grazing kale, small grains, sunflowers, and chicory. This diet results in firmer fat, a clean taste, higher CLAs, and a better Omega 3:6 ratio.
The Rest
Home delivery is available within 150 miles of Spring Grove, MN, for a fee. Tours of the farm are available by appointment. Customers can reserve whole or half hogs, which are USDA processed at Burt's Meats in Eyota, MN. The farm offers a variety of processing options, including custom cuts and seasoned ground pork or brats. Updates on the pigs are frequently posted on the farm's Facebook page and Instagram feed.
