About the Farm
Background
The farm, located on 330 acres of fields and woodland in Monroe, Maine, was purchased in 2009 by Anna Shapley-Quinn and Seth Yentes. Over the years, it has developed into a diversified operation known for its five-acre orchard, one-acre highbush blueberry patch, and a fruit tree nursery. The farm is family-owned and operated, with the help of their two children.
Practices
The farm employs a combination of horsepower, hand power, and tractor power to manage its operations. They work with a team of Haflinger horses to grow and harvest hay, seed garlic, and manage their 200-acre woodlot. The farm also raises grass-fed beef, which is sold 'on the hoof,' and produces winter storage vegetables. Their practices emphasize the use of both traditional and modern farming techniques to maintain the health of the land and the quality of their produce.
The Rest
In addition to their primary farming activities, the farm offers a one-acre pick-your-own highbush blueberry patch that typically opens in late July or early August. They also have a young apple orchard that is beginning to produce. As of March 2020, they are selling grass-fed, raw-milk, cave-ripened cow's milk Alpine and Tomme cheese made in their now-inactive creamery. The farm also sells pine and hemlock lumber milled from their woods.
