About the Farm
Background
Nye Ranch is a revitalized property that was once a seaside dairy, now transformed by Kyle and Mel into a vibrant market farm. Situated just 1,200 feet from the Pacific Ocean, the farm benefits from a unique maritime climate. The historic 120+ year old barn stands at the heart of the property, which spans six acres along Highway 1.
Practices
The farm employs organic amendments, compost, and compost teas, which are brewed on-site using kelp from local sources. The coastal climate, characterized by ample fog and salty winds, is ideal for growing a variety of vegetables including broccoli, cauliflower, and cabbage. The farm also produces strawberries, sugar snap peas, radishes, lettuce, kale, summer squash, kohlrabi, turnips, beets, chard, garlic, carrots, and tomatoes. Seasonal specialties like garlic-scapes in the spring and heirloom tomatoes in the summer are also cultivated.
The Rest
The farm stand is open every Saturday from 10am to 3pm, offering a selection of local, fragrant, long-lasting, and chemical-free flowers. Bouquets vary with the seasons, featuring sweet peas, poppies, and ranunculus in the spring, and dahlias, snapdragons, and chrysanthemums in the fall. The farm is easily accessible from Highway 1, just two miles north of Fort Bragg, and is marked by a picturesque hay barn and the foggy Pacific Ocean backdrop.
